Q. Is there any concept of the evil eye in Islam?
Q. Is it a right practice to wear amulets and charms to protect yourself from the evil eye?
Q. These are some of the major questions that a Muslim raises about the evil eye?
Q. Have you been the victim of the evil eye? Did you ever raise these questions?
Q. Are you curious to learn what your religion says about this matter?
If yes, then this blog will quench your thirst for knowledge in the light of the Quran and Hadith.
Allah created Adam and asked angels to prostrate in front of him. Iblis refused to prostrate in front of Adam and Allah ordered him to leave the Jannah and gave him the status of Rajim (the cursed one). When Allah entered Adam in Jannah, he felt envious of it and started misleading Adam and Hawa about the tree that Allah forbid them. Similarly, the evil eye of a person can also cause harm to the other one to whom one is envious.
The concept of the evil eye is not only found in Islam. It is part of many religions and cultures. Is it a part of your culture? Every religion and culture justifies and cures the evil eye in its way. Among Muslims, some wear talismans, amulets, charms, etc. Others believe in going to the fortune teller. Being Muslims, we should consult the Hadith and Sunnah of the Holy Prophet (PBUH)before any religious practice or belief. How do these sources of law guide us in our practices?
The verse 51 of the chapter, Al-Qalam, Allah says:
"And indeed, those who disbelieve would almost make you slip with their eyes [i.e., looks] when they hear the message, and they say, "Indeed, he is mad."
It is clear from the above-mentioned verses of the Holy Quran that yes evil eye exists and it can harm you in one way or another. The evil eye is the harm or loss due to someone's envious or jealous eye towards the blessings of other Muslims. The one who is inflicting an envious eye may or may not be aware of the harm he is inflicting to his brother Muslim fellow. I can expect that you must be wondering how someone's glance can inflict harm to others? But, yes, it happens and someone's jealous eye can bring harm to you.
"Abdul-Aziz bin Suhaib said: Thabit Al-Bunani and I entered upon Anas bin Malik, and Thabit said: 'O Abu Hamzah! I am suffering from an illness. So, Anas said: 'Shall I not recite the Ruqyah of the Messenger of Allah over you?' He said: 'Why, yes.' He said: 'O Allah! Lord of mankind, removed the harm, and cure (him). Indeed, you are the One Who cures, there is none who cures except you, a cure that leaves no disease."
You can find this concept of the evil eye is present in many similar Hadith and verses. It is clear that yes evil eye happens and inflicts harm. Here, we should consider how to protect ourselves from the evil eye. If it has inflicted some harm then how to get rid of it?
Protection and Treatment of the evil eye:
Here again, we should consider the Quran and Sunnah for the knowledge of protection and treatment of the evil eye. Here are some of the steps that you can follow to protect yourself.
1. Say Ma Sha Allah when you observe the blessings of any Muslim. Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta'ala bestowed every blessing. If he has bestowed it to your fellow Muslim, he can bless you with that blessing as well. So, instead of being envious say Ma Sha Allah for your fellow and ask it for yourself.
2. Some of the verses of the Holy Quran are very powerful in this respect of protecting you against the evil eye. For example, Surah Falaq and Surah Naas, Surah Al Fathia and Ayat Al Kursi.
3. You can recite Ruqyah (a process of keeping Tawakul in Allah, there is a proper method to recite Ruqyah in Islam and you need to follow the steps). The recitation of Ruqyah will help you to get rid of the evil eye.
4. Dhikr is one of the best ways to keep yourself connected to Allah. The repeated recitation of some Dhikrs can protect you against the evil eye.
One of the most powerful Dhikr for protection against the evil eye is:
أَعُوذُ بِكَلِمَاتِ اللَّهِ التَّامَّةِ مِنْ كُلِّ شَيْطَانٍ وَهَامَّةٍ وَمِنْ كُلِّ عَيْنٍ لاَمَّةٍ
Translation: I seek refuge for you both in the Perfect Words of Allah, from every devil and every poisonous reptile, and from every evil eye.
This Dhikr is called the prayer of Ibrahim.
Another treatment narrated in Hadith of Holy Prophet (PBUH) is to take bath from the Wudu water of envier. It is only possible when you know about the envier.
These are some of the steps that you can follow for protection and cure of the evil eye. May Allah protect every Muslim from evil and show his blessings upon us.
